LEAH TATIS ART PORTFOLIO

Edgar Degas once said, “Do it again, ten times, a hundred times. Nothing in art must seem to be an accident, not even movement.” The main inspiration as an artist stems from the world around me.  The works of Edgar Degas, J.C. Leyendecker, and Malcolm Liepke inspire me because of their beautiful painting styles and techniques. Edgar Degas was an impressionist artist. Degas used techniques such as hatching to create surface textures and also used materials such as watercolor and gouache to paint his figures.  His works inspired me to try using gouache to paint. Leyendecker’s work inspired me to use stylized proportions and Liepke’s work inspired me to use cool colors when painting. Impressionism is a style of painting developed in France that is characterized by small brush strokes, ordinary subject matter, and an accurate depiction of light. I admire the style of impression because of it’s ability to capture an image in many short strokes.

There are many decisions I make when I am creating artwork. Before I start making an artwork, I have to decide what materials I will use and the themes of the artwork. I do this by envisioning my idea and determining what materials and themes best fit my vision. When I am making my art, I also have to choose which techniques to use to best convey my idea. I do this by thinking about what options I have and choosing the best option.

There are many decisions I make when I am creating artwork. Currently, I began working on a painting based off of Edgar Degas’s painting, The Blue Dancers. The choice to create this work is to challenge myself and enhance my painting techniques. I draw and paint hoping that one day I will be able to develop my own style based on these famous works of art.
